McGrath Breast Care Nurses
It was in 2003 when I was re-diagnosed with breast cancer that I realised the importance of having a breast care nurse, something I was fortunate enough to have access to for the first time. Someone who could answer the questions only a nurse could answer whilst also being the support I needed to unload my frustrations and emotions.
Having access to a breast care nurse allowed me to be Jane McGrath, the friend, the mother and the wife – not just Jane McGrath, the breast cancer patient.

As a result of Jane’s passion for the need to create more breast care nurse roles to support women diagnosed with breast cancer, and her commitment to sourcing additional funding, the McGrath Foundation signed a contract with the Australian Government Department of Health and Ageing in June 2008 for the funding of breast care nurse support in an additional 44 communities nationwide over the next four years.
The McGrath Foundation has worked closely with all state and territory health departments, as well as nominated area health services, to determine areas of need and therefore the locations for the additional McGrath Breast Care Nurses.
Under this program, a further 44 communities should have access to a McGrath Breast Care Nurse by 30 June 2009, bringing the total number of McGrath Breast Care Nurses within the Australian community to 53 nationwide.
