The McGrath Model of Care
A framework to enhance care and improve outcomes
The McGrath Model of Care is a framework for the delivery of best practice cancer care nursing.
We are committed to continuous improvement to achieve quality outcomes for people experiencing cancer and enhance service delivery.
A new McGrath Model of Care is currently in development to reflect the delivery of high-quality supportive care cancer nursing for any type of cancer.
The development of the McGrath Model of Care is due for completion in mid-2025.
McGrath Model of Care principles
The McGrath Model of Care will:
Align with evidenced-based practice that is guided by the Optimal Care Pathways for cancer care best practice nursing principles.
Capture the voices of people with a cancer experience and their carers.
Recognise the expertise, existing information and knowledge from other cancer organisations and healthcare professionals.
Engage with a broad range of stakeholders, including people with a cancer experience, carers, health professionals, cancer advocacy groups and researchers.
Be supported by a range of expert clinicians, academics and people with a lived experience.
Equity of care
Equity is central to the McGrath Model of Care. It must consider and address the needs of priority populations. This will involve targeted approaches to actively engage members of all priority population communities, including Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander Peoples.
The McGrath Foundation is co-designing a Model of Care for people with any cancer to ensure that it reflects and meets the needs of both people experiencing cancer, their carers and the healthcare professionals who support them.
