Today our CEO, Petra Buchanan, has joined Prime Minister Turnbull in Hobart for the announcement that the Federal Government will renew its four-year funding of Commonwealth McGrath Breast Care Nurses.
Petra said, ‘We are so grateful for the Federal Government’s continued commitment to funding existing McGrath Breast Care Nurses. This announcement gives certainty to the positions of 57 of our 110 nurses over the next four years.’
With more and more people being diagnosed with breast cancer, and living longer with the disease, the need for breast care nurses is more crucial than ever. The McGrath Foundation’s research into the growing demand for breast care nurses highlights a current shortage of 85 breast care nurses across the country. By 2020, this is expected to increase by 38 per cent, with an additional 109 breast care nurses needed to provide the necessary care and support for patients and families affected by breast cancer.
Petra continued, ‘Together with the support of our community of fundraisers, donors and corporate partners, Government’s commitment is crucial to ensuring we can place nurses in communities across Australia to provide invaluable assistance to families experiencing breast cancer.’
