The city of Townsville is putting their best foot forward for the McGrath Foundation’s Pull On Your Socks fundraiser, supported by the hard work of the Townsville District Rugby League community, the Blackhawks and the Cowboys. Together, they will join forces to raise money for families experiencing breast cancer.

The inaugural Pull On Your Socks round will be held on the 2nd and 3rd of June 2017, and involve players of all ages. All participating clubs will proudly wear their McGrath Foundation socks.

The group came together when Nikolas Mitchell, a 13 year old student at Townsville Grammar School, was moved by a close family friend’s experience with breast cancer. Nik encouraged his mum to get involved in supporting the McGrath Foundation to show support for his best friend.

From there, what started as a small event continued to grow ‘ soon not only was Nik’s club onboard, but also the Blackhawks, and the Cowboys who were willing to throw their support behind the campaign.

At the event, the team are expecting to hold auctions for signed jerseys, and McGrath Foundation merchandise, and they encourage all attendees to make a donation.

Pull On Your Socks provides an opportunity for communities to purchase pink sports socks and raise money to fund McGrath Breast Care Nurses in communities nationally.

McGrath Foundation Ambassador and Director, Tracy Bevan says ‘Pull On Your Socks is a fun way for communities to support the Foundation’s mission of ensuring every family impacted by breast cancer has access to a dedicated breast care nurse, no matter where they live or their financial situation.’

We’re encouraging everyone to follow Townsville’s example and put their best foot forward this winter and get creative in ways they can support a Pull On Your Socks fundraising event,’ said Tracy.

Kelly Mitchell, Nikolas’ mum said ‘It’s amazing to see how much this event has grown and grown. There’s such a great sense of motivation and enthusiasm that is spreading through our community.’
