Cricketing legend and McGrath Foundation Co-Founder and President, Glenn McGrath, was in Walbundrie to attend local Walbundrie Tigers’ Cricket Club’s Pink Stumps Day Fundraiser.
The local club won a competition set up by the McGrath Foundation to win a visit from Glenn to their event after being selected out of hundreds of worthy entries.
Pink Stumps Day is the McGrath Foundation’s largest community fundraising campaign where cricket clubs and teams, workplaces, schools and backyard players across the nation turn their cricket game pink to fundraise for the McGrath Foundation.
Pink Stumps Day plays a vital fundraising role to help achieve the Foundation’s mission of ensuring every family affected by breast cancer has access to a free McGrath Breast Care Nurse, no matter where they live or their financial situation.
Despite being affected by drought, Walbundrie hadn’t lost its spark, fundraising to support the McGrath Foundation and a cause which has affected many locals.
“Getting down to Walbundrie and onto the pitch with the Tigers was great. Over 1,200 people all across Australia held games last season and helped raise just over $1 million. It’s inspiring that communities facing hard times, such as Walbundrie, are coming together, having fun and hosting a Pink Stumps Day.
“Approximately 15 people in NSW are diagnosed with breast cancer every day. We currently fund 47 McGrath Breast Care Nurses in NSW but we need funding for another 44 to ensure every family in NSW experiencing breast cancer has access to this vital service for free,” said Glenn.
Gabi Pulla is the McGrath Breast Care Nurse based in the Albury Wodonga region.
“I’ve met so many inspiring people in my role and each one faces their own challenges following a breast cancer diagnosis, so it’s great to see the community coming together to show their support and show they care,” she said.
Walbundrie Tigers Treasurer Sue Collins who wrote the winning entry said the town was thrilled to have won a visit from Glenn.
“Glenn coming to our Pink Stumps Day means so much to our club and community as a whole. The whole region is buzzing, even people in Echuca contacted me last week to say they’d heard about it.”
“There are a lot of people at the club who have been affected by breast cancer so we were really happy to fundraise for the McGrath Foundation,” said Ms Collins.
